The Enlightenment was an extensive intellectual, philosophical, and cultural movement that spread throughout Europe, predominantly England, France and Germany during the 18th century. The Scientific Revolution, which began in the 16th century, gave way to a new and revolutionary way of thinking. It encouraged independent thought, the capacity to ask questions, and a progressive attitude. Additionally, the enlightenment arose during a time when there was absolute monarchy and an extremely powerful church. Political, philosophical, cultural, and religious ideas were in the need of reform. The French Revolution was arguably an effect of the growing ideas of the enlightenment. People within France finally had enough of absolute monarchy and wanted reform. Philosophers and thinkers were crucial to the progress of the enlightenment. Thinkers such as Immanuel Kant, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, John Locke, and Adam Smith were prominent figures of the enlightenment. They questioned religion, promot ed secularism, and freedom. Most believed that the government was to be an extension of the people and should not be totalitarian. Locke and Rousseau were focused on protecting the people’s rights. Adam Smith focused on the economic aspects and promoted a free economy without restrictions from the all powerful monarchy. He is the founder of modern economics. Immanuel Kant focused on the problem with government and how the absolute monarchy had been detrimental to the people. The scientists and philosophes of these eras discovered and taught new ideas that often contradicted what the church and former thinkers had taught and believed before them. Rader, BTK This paper is about Dennis Lynn Rader, a serial killer who haunted the city of Wichita, Kansas for about 30 years, beginning in 1974 with his first murder until his capture in February 2005. Its about his upbringing, his life, his career, his murders, his victims and his capture so many years later. Dennis Lynn Rader was born on March 9th 1945 in Pittsburgh, Kansas. Hes the oldest of four sons born to William and Dorothea Rader. The family moved to Wichita, Kansas when Dennis was a young boy. As a child, Dennis was normal and unremarkable. He was a Boy Scout and participated in his a lot of his churchs activities. He was an average student in lementary school and by his own admission he says he developed fantasies about bondage and torture from a very early age. He said that when he was old enough to have sex he would dream about tying girls up and having his way with them. He also admits to having killed cats and dogs as an adolescent. He kept his love for bondage, torture and death a secret from everyone. He was described as quiet and polite who liked to keep to himself. He graduated from Wichita Heights High School in 1963 and started working in a grocery store until he entered college in 1965. He was a poor student and when he turned 21 he entered the US Air Force. He then was send to Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio for basic training. During his time in the Air Force he was stationed in Wichita Falls/Texas, Mobile/Alabama, Okinawa/Japan and also spent time in Korea, Greece and Turkey while serving in the Air Force. He left the Air Force as sergeant and fellow soldiers said he was Just one of those guys who blend in. After his service in the Air Force he returned to his home town of Wichita/Kansas in 1970. On May 22nd, 1971 he married Paula Dietz, a woman who grew up in the same area, attended the same high school and went to the same church as Rader did. The young coupled bought a home in Park City, located in north Wichita. At that time Dennis was working in the meat department of a supermarket and Paula was a bookkeeper. In 1972, Rader started working for Coleman, a large manufacturer of camping supplies. He worked there until 1973 and then switched workplaces again, starting working for Cessna and also attending college, earning an associates degree in Electronics. In the fall of 1973 he began studies at Wichita State University, but it would take him six years to finish his degree. In early 1974 he was between Jobs he would start trolling neighborhoods, looking for women and his antasies about bondage, torture and killing would become stronger and stronger. observed the house for a while, learning their daily schedule. He would put together a kit, which he called a hit kit, consisting of a gun, cords, knives and different tools for entering a house. On January 15th, 1974 he committed his first murder. He cut the telephone line before entering the house and was surprised in finding Joseph Otero still at home, as well as his wife and their youngest children Josephine and Joey. He didnt expect everybody to be home but somehow controlled the situation using his un. He told the Oteros he was a criminal and Just needed money and a car to flee the state. He managed to tie them all up and started to put a bag over Josephs head to kill him. But he fought hard and Rader strangled him with a cord instead. After Joe was dead he then went on to kill Julie, who begged him, not to kill the children. The next one to die was Joey, the nine year old son of the family. He strangled and suffocated him and sat down in a chair to watch him die. Last but not least it was Josies turn. His first attempt of strangling her failed, so he forced her to walk ownstairs in the basement. There he put a noose around her neck and hanged her from a pipe, leaving her partially undressed. He masturbated on her bare legs, leaving semen behind. After cleaning up the house a little bit he took the familys car and drove it toa nearby supermarket. What Rader didnt know is that the Oteros had three older children, who had already left the house that morning. Charlie, Daniel and Carmen were the ones that found their parents dead that afternoon. Raders next victim was Kathryn Bright. He broke into her home and hid in the bedroom waiting for her to return home. Again something went wrong for Rader, and Bright returned home, accompanied by her younger brother Kevin. He surprised them and using his gun he forced Kevin to tie up his sister. Then he took Kevin in another room, trying to tie him up with material found in the home. Kevin got loose and Rader shot him twice in the head. Thinking Kevin was dead, Rader went on to work on Kathryn. She resisted heavily and instead of strangling her, he ended up stabbing her multiple times. During that time Kevin, who wasnt dead, fled the house and called for help. Rader was forced to leave the scene quickly, ran to his car, and drove ff. Kathryn died in the hospital a few hours later and Kevin survived miraculously. In October 1974, Rader began to taunt the police, a game he will play with the Wichita Police for over thirty years. He called a newspaper editor and directed him toa hidden letter in a book at the Wichita Public Library. The editor notified the police, who found the letter in the book. In 2003 his daughter got married and moved away to Michigan. His son Brian Joined the Navvy and left for the East Coast. In 2004, Rader was elected vice president of the Church Council in his Lutheran Church. He was seen as a trusted leader and helper. Despite being busy with work and church, Rader became increasingly bored. This might be one of the reasons why he decided to emerge again, haunting the people of Wichita. On March 17th 2004 Rader mailed a letter to the Wichita Eagle, which contained photographs of the body of Vicki Wegerle, as well as a copy of her drivers license. With the arrival of this letter, Wegerles husband Bill was cleared as a suspect in his wifes murder. Another letter arrived on May 5th 2004 at a Wichita TV station. It was a letter containing puzzles, but the FBI couldnt make any sense out of it. On June 9th 2004 a package was found ontaining grisly sketches of his victims and a letter with horrendous details of the Otero familys murder. Rader then deposited another package on July 17th 2004. This time he put it in the book return of Wichita Public Library downtown. This package contained a letter, saying that he had found his new victim and is about to strike. His sixth package was found on December 14th 2004 by a man, who was walking in a park. He took it home to look inside and found out what he had in his hands. He handed the package over to the police who found a doll inside with a plastic bag wrapped around her head, her hands and feet tied and the drivers icense of Nancy Fox. By January 2005 Rader was now President of the Church Council. That didnt stop him from delivering more packages to taunt the Wichita Police. This time he put a cereal box in the bed ofa pickup truck parked outside of Home Depot. In this package the Police found some information Rader revealed about himself (and to be found not true later in the investigation), names of victims he had watched and a questions for the investigators: If they would be able to trace a floppy disc! He said that he wants an answer to this question posted in the Wichita Eagle classified section in the miscellaneous section. The police answered his question that it is impossible to trace a floppy disk to the source where it has been used. Rader deposited a few more packages and in his eleventh package a floppy disk was found. The disc was immediately analyzed and traced back to Christ Lutheran Church in Wichita and the name Dennis. Apparently Rader was sure he had erased all contents that could tie him to the diskette. Police found out that the name of the churchs president was Dennis. They drove by Raders house and found that he owned a black Jeep Cherokee, a car that was seen on surveillance tapes from Home DNA sample taken from his daughter was compared to the DNA found in semen at earlier crime scenes. It was a close match, meaning that the crime scene DNA must come from a close relative of Kerri Rader. On February 25th 2005 the BTK Killer was arrested shortly after 12pm. At first he refused to talk about the murders, but when confronted with the evidence (DNA match, floppy disk) he started talking and made a 30 hour confession. He revealed details never known before and proudly recited his achievements. Police searched Raders home, office and church office. They found lenty of evidence, like the original letters, drivers licenses, photos, etc On February 28th 2005, Rader was formally charged with 10 counts of first degree murder. Rader never spoke at his arraignment, so District Court Judge Gregory Waller entered not guilty pleas to the 10 charges on Raders behalf. When the scheduled trial date arrived on June 27th, Rader changed his plea to guilty. He was found guilty and received 10 consecutive life terms. He is now serving his life sentence at El Dorado Correctional Facility in El Dorado/Kansas with an earliest possible release date of February 26th 2180. In the end, a simple mistake led to Dennis Raders capture. He simply believed the police, when they told him a diskette cant be traced to the source. Being so smart and getting arrested due to such a big mistake makes me believe that he couldnt take it anymore and wanted to be arrested. He haunted the city of Wichita/Kansas for over thirty years, becoming one of the most notorious serial killers in the United States. He lived a double life. Famous profilers like Robert Ressler were wrong in many points of the profile they made up for him. Will Lowman Charley says something in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman that sums up Willy's whole life. He asks him, When the hell are you going to grow up? Willy's spends his entire life in an illusion. He sees himself as a great man that is popular and successful. Willy exhibits many childlike qualities. Many of these qualities have an impact on Willy's family. His two sons Biff and Happy pick up this behavior from their father. He is idealistic, stubborn, and he has a false sense of his importance in the world. Willy is like an impetuous youngster with high ideals and high hopes. Children always have high hopes for their future. They all want to be astronauts or millionaires. Willy always believes he can achieve that kind of success. He never lets go of his wasted life. He dreams of being the man who does all of his business out of his house and dying a rich and successful man. Furthermore, Willy also dreams of moving to Alaska where he could work with his hands and be a real man. Biff and Happy follow in their father's footsteps in their lofty dreams and unrealistic goals. Biff wastes his life being a thief and a loner; furthermore, Biff, along with happy try to conjure up a crazy idea of putting on a sporting goods exhibition. The problem with Willy is that he never grows up and deals with his obstacles. Willy is also a very stubborn man. He is like a little child that wants to do something their way even though they know that another option would be the wiser choice. Charley practically sets a potential job into Willy's lap and he refuses it. Willy just was fired and needed a job. He refuses one. Willy is too stubborn to let go of his old job and take a new one. He still believes that he is at the top of his profession. When Willy does not get his way he acts just as a child would. He has tantrums such as when he basically challenged Charley to a fight after he told him to grow up. Biff is also stubborn like his father. He never gives up being a child. He steals and lies. Biff cannot handle being ignored, so he steals a pen. Willy's childlike stubbornness hampers him throughout his life. Willy, like most children thinks that he is more important than he actually is. During the whole story, he brags himself up, calling himself a great salesman. He says that he is known everywhere. When his funeral is to occur, Willy believed that it will be a major event. Many will come to pay their respects to New England's greatest salesman. He is just an old broken down man who never was good at his job. Willy is not well known. Few attend his funeral. When one is a child, they believe that they are more important than they really are. As people grow older they realize that they are just one of many in the world. Willy Loman never does realize this fact. Biff and Happy never realize it either. They continue to believe that the Lomans are an extraordinary family above all others. After Willy dies, Happy proclaims that he will continue his fathers quest as the great salesman. Biff believes that the Lomans are not liked because they are rough and tough men who use their hands. Willy goes through his entire life believing that is a great, well known, and well-liked salesman. Willy Loman is a child trapped in a man's body. He never lets go of his dreams. Finding Water on Mars   Ever since we began the exploration of Mars with spacecraft (back in the 1960s), scientists have been on the lookout for evidence of water on the Red Planet. Each mission gathers more evidence for the existence of water in the past and present, and each time definitive proof is found, scientists share that information with the public. Now, with the popularity of Mars missions on the rise and the amazing story of survival that moviegoers have seen in The Martian, with Matt Damon, the search for water on Mars takes on additional meaning.   On Earth, definitive proof of water is easy to find - in as rain and snow, in lakes, ponds, rivers, and the oceans. Since we havent visited Mars in person yet, scientists work with observations made by orbiting spacecraft and lander/rovers on the surface. Future explorers WILL be able to find that water and study it and use it, so its important to know NOW about how much there is and where it exists on the Red Planet.   Streaks on Mars Over the past few years, scientists noticed curious-looking dark streaks that appear on the surface on steep slopes. They seem to come and go with the change of seasons, as temperatures change. They darken and appear to flow down the slopes during periods when the temperatures are warmer, and then fade out as things cool down. These streaks appear in several locations on Mars and have been called recurring slope linae (or RSLs for short). Scientists strongly suspect theyre related to liquid water that deposits hydrated salts (salts that have been in contact with water) on those slopes.   Salts Point the Way Observers took a look at the RSLs using an instrument onboard NASAs Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter called the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM). It looked at sunlight after it had been reflected from the surface, and analyzed it to figure out what chemical elements and minerals were there. The observations showed the chemical signature of hydrated salts in several locations, but only when the dark features were wider than usual.   A second look at the same places, but when the swaths were not very wide didnt turn up any hydrated salt. What this means is that if theres water there, its wetting the salt and causing it to show up in the observations.What are these salts? Observers determined that they are hydrated minerals called perchlorates, which are known to exist on Mars. Both the Mars Phoenix Lander and the Curiosity rover have found them in the soil samples theyve studied. The discovery of these perchlorates is the first time these salts have been spotte d from orbit over several years. Their existence is a huge clue in the search for water. Why Worry about Water on Mars?   If it seems that Mars scientists have announced water discoveries before, remember this: the discovery of water on Mars has not been one single discovery. It is the result of many observations over the past 50 years, each one giving more solid evidence that water exists. More studies will pinpoint more water, and eventually give planetary scientists a much better handle on how much water the Red Planet has and its sources underground.   Ultimately, people will travel to Mars, perhaps sometime in the next 20 years. When they do, those first Mars explorers will need all the information they can get about conditions on the Red Planet. Water, of course, is important. Its essential to life, and it can be used as a raw ingredient for many things (including fuel). Mars explorers and inhabitants will need to rely on the resources around them, just as explorers on Earth had to do as they explored our planet.   Just as important, however, is to understand Mars in its own right. Its similar to Earth in many ways, and formed in roughly the same region of the solar system some 4.6 billion years ago. Even if we never send people to the Red Planet, knowing its history and composition help fill in our knowledge of the solar systems many worlds. In particular, knowing its water history helps fill in the gaps of our understanding about what this planet may have been in the past: warm, wet, and much more habitable for life than it is now.

Ambrose, Kathleen’s son is killed by Frances accidentally. Frances goes completely off track and starts doing prostitution to make money for Lily. Frances also gets pregnant and stops prostitution. James dies later on and everything depends on Mercedes since Frances is in a big shock. Later on, Lily goes to New York and Frances dies. Even though Mercedes is not pursuing her education any further, she is learning to be a responsible women and she does not marry in the future because she needs to take care of her sisters and her father. Whereas, Hamlet’s sacrifice caused Ophelia to not trust Hamlet anymore and later on in the play, that lead to her death. * The other element that has been used is symbolism. Symbolism is used to show what each character has become because of the decisions that they choose to make. In both texts, there are a lot of symbols that represents the characters or the meaning of their life. * In fall on your knees, darkness is used to represent the sacrifices that the characters make without knowing the consequences. They do not know what lies ahead and what the result might be for taking that action. But, they continue to do it because they feel that they need to do it. The other symbol that is used is monster. It is used to represent Materia. It represents Materia because she has become a monster while searching for the happiness of the family. â€Å"Materia saw herself in a clear glass at last and it was Monstrous. † This shows that even she knows that she has turned into a monster. Materia thinks that she is happy without her daughter. She does not want her daughter to come back. She is ready to sacrifice her own daughter for the family’s happiness. This is similar to the monster since monsters are ready to eat their own children to fill their own stomach when needed. The other symbol that is used in the novel is scarecrow. Scarecrow is used to represent the memories that they had in the past. It was made by Materia. James tears it down because he does not want to remember his past since there had been a lot of incidents that have happened in his life. He wants to live without having to remember his past. * Similarly in Hamlet, sponge is used to represent Rosencrantz. Hamlet thinks that Rosencrantz is giving up his friendship to suck up to the King. He feels betrayed by his own friend. He calls Rosencrantz a sponge when he says â€Å"Besides, to be demanded of a sponge! † (IV. . 12). Since, he has become a messenger that acts as a carrier of messages and spills it in front of King, Rosencrantz collects all the information like a sponge collects water and spills it in front of a king, similar to how water spills off the sponge when it is squeezed. * In Fall on Your Knees, Materia meets her consequences when she was finally able to love Kathleen. She has to sacrifice Kathleen just so the twins can see the new world. As well as James lived a happy life in the future where he didn’t had to think about his past and died in peace. Similar to Materia, Rosencrantz is sent to England where he is to be executed with his friend, Guildenstern, as soon as he reaches there. * The last element that is used is diction. Diction is used to show the consequences of the sacrifices that are made by the characters for their benefit, where someone else pays the price of their sacrifice, or for the benefit of someone else, where they pay the price by themselves. The choices of their decisions give the characters several names in the both texts. * James is a widower. He has to take care of mother less children since his wife died. He needs to make money in the Great Depression time, so he does things that give him bad name. People in the town say â€Å"Mercedes’ father [James] was a bad man. A bootlegger. A scab. An enemy of this town† (232) He makes and sells illegal liquor in the town that gives him bad reputation. He is being called a â€Å"bootlegger†, â€Å"scab† and â€Å"enemy of the town† because of the illegal business that he does. But he does not care about what the other people say, because he needs to make money to support his family financially. He sacrifices his reputation in the town for the sake of family. Similarly, the business that Frances does is not giving her a good reputation that she wants. She becomes everything of Lily, her niece, whom she calls sister. Frances blames herself for Lily being disabled. She wants to make money for her, so she starts selling herself and becomes a stripper because she thinks that is the fastest way to make money. She becomes so bad that Camille calls her â€Å"The slut who lives only to dishonour the memory of poor Materia. † (316). This shows that Frances has been selling her stuff that she got bad reputation in the town. She does all this because she feels as if this is needed to do for the sake of Lily, since Frances thinks that Lily might need these money in future. * Similarly in Hamlet, Polonius does everything that he can to suck up to the King, no matter what happens. He is even ready to sacrifice his own daughter, Ophelia. This is one reason why hamlet calls him â€Å"Excellent well; you are a fishmonger† (II. 2. 190). Polonius is called a â€Å"fishmonger†, because he can sacrifice his own daughter to curry the King as much as he possibly can. He does this just to show how much he can be trusted. This keeps on hurting Ophelia and causes her to go through more pain even though Polonius is considered a trustable person by the king. * James dies without even having any friend because whatever he does for his family is affecting everyone in the town which makes the people in town hate him more. Similarly, Frances is never loved by anyone except Mercedes and Lily. At the end, the money comes to use of Lily, but to earn that money; Frances had to go through a lot of pain. Similarly, Ophelia goes through a lot of pain since she was being used by her father to curry the king. This attitude of sucking up to the King decides Polonius’s destiny and he gets killed. * In conclusion, there are a lot of different decisions that affect the whole novel later on. While some of them are good choices, some of them are bad that they decide to do for the sake of someone or self. This is shown by the use of narrative elements such as characterisation, symbolism and diction, which all show the choices that they made and the result of those choices. Even though we all make decisions and sacrifices in our life, one will learn whether the sacrifices that they made were worth of making or not after the sacrifice has been made.

One of the main reasons unemployment remains high to this day is the lack of demand. A shortfall in aggregate demand is precisely the type of issue that can be addressed by monetary policy, however, to do so we need continuous monetary stimulus to progress toward maximum employment stability. The crash of the housing market has set tremendous limitation on consumer and their spending. Sternness on behalf of the government to a certain extent has decreased aggregate demand during this recovery period. These actions have directly impacted growth. Wh at this means to us is that lower government spending and higher taxes call for disposable income for consumers, work for government contractors diminishing, and a decrease in government payroll. Another factor that has had great effect and impact are the levels of uncertainty. The events leading to this state have yet to be resolved which in turn have caused a lack of willingness and confidence within consumers. In the beginning the levels of uncertainty reflected the force of influence the recession had on us as consumers. This is something that had not been experienced in several years which made it difficult for us to handle or even find a way to get by in a more successful demeanor. Section 5 says that Congress must have a minimum number of members present in order to meet, and that it may set fines for people who do not show up. Section 6 createes that members of Congress will be paid, that they cannot be detained while traveling to and from Congress, that they cannot hold any other office in the government while in the Congress. Section 7 details how bills become law. First, any bill for raising money must start out in the House. All bills must pass both houses of Congress in the exact same form. Students who fasted overnight would improve after drinking a glucose drink, where the placebo drink would not improve performance after fasting. The hypothesis was supported. It also shows that there was a difference between the two groups being tested. The numbers show that the glucose level was higher when real sugar drinks were being used. The data was collected by physical measures. They took a convenience sampling of eighty A- level students from two colleges. Within the sample there were 44 males and 36 females. The participants were asked to report to a specific room at 9 a. m. No more than 10 were in each room within a particular college. They were randomly assigned either the glucose or placebo group (they were unaware of any distinction). They were administered a version of the Listening Span Test. The students listened to a series of sentences. Then on a response sheet, they would record whether the preposition in each sentence was true or false. Then the students were required to write down, in forward serial order the last word in each sentence. After completion there was a twenty minute interval. Students were given orange juice to drink. One group got real orange juice; the other was given a placebo drink to emulate orange juice. They were then given a different version of the Listening Span Test. Researchers took ten samples of blood; five from placebo and five from glucose group. There wasn’t a difference in the taste of the beverages that was given to the students, even though one drink had 50 grams of glucose and the placebo contained the 2 grams of sweetex in place of the glucose. The students that took part of this study gave three blood samples before the drinks were consumed, and three more samples of blood was required 20 minutes after the Listening Span Test was given for the second time. The researcher controlled as much as possible to determine the cause and effect relationship exists between the variables being studied. The research design was quantitative due to the data analysis and cannot take place until all data had been collected. The glucose levels of the students that did participate in the study stayed the same, and the listening span did improve after the consumption of the glucose drink. Fasting also played a role in this study; it helped improve the listening span after the students received drinks that contained real sugar (glucose). The purpose of using the Listening Span Test was to measure the capacity of verbal memory. Sentences were read to the students the longest was six sentences long. This was done to determine how much the students could comprehend in a short period of time. In conclusion the research showed a modest increase in listening span performance after a glucose drink was taken.
